In 1936 he moved to New York City, directed solely to the personal pursuit of painting, supporting himself when necessary by teaching. Involved in the climate, physicality and passion of the 1950s, Vicente's work established him as an integral part of the New York School. The energy of the 1950s through 2000 expresses itself in the quality and focus of his painting, collage, drawing and sculpture.
\r\n\r\nEsteban Vicente taught at the University of Puerto Rico, the University of California at Berkeley and Los Angeles, Yale University, Columbia University, New York University, Queens College, Black Mountain College, and as a Founding Member in 1964 of The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture until 2000. He was artist-in-residence at Boston University, Honolulu Academy of Art in Hawaii, Des Moines Art Center in Iowa, Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts, and Princeton University. Twice awarded grants by the Ford Foundation, he was also the recipient of a fellowship from the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, and two prizes from the National Academy of Design in New York.
